7 Reasons I Miss California (And Why People Are Still Leaving)

I’ll be honest, there are so many things I truly miss about living in California: the ocean, the year-round weather, the food, even that unmistakable California vibe.

But here’s the truth. Even with all those things I loved, I still know leaving was the best decision for my family. And I’m not alone. Every year, more and more people are asking the big question: why are people leaving California?

For me, the answer is a mix of trade-offs and perspective. You can miss what you left behind and still know it was the right choice. Here are the 7 things I miss most and the reasons I believe so many people are making the move out of California.

1. The Ocean

I grew up spoiled with the beach just a short drive away. That salty breeze, the sound of the waves, and those sunsets over the Pacific were magical.

But beach days in California often came with packed parking lots, sky-high hotel rates, and traffic that could turn a 30-minute drive into two hours.

In Tennessee, I have incredible lakes. I can take the Sea-Doo out for the day, dock at a waterfront restaurant, and never have to fight for a spot on the sand.

2. Year-Round Mild Weather

California’s weather spoiled me. You could plan a picnic in January without checking the forecast.

But after a while, every day felt the same. I did not realize how much I missed actual seasons until I moved to Tennessee. Now I get spring blooms, fall colors, cozy winters, and yes, the summer heat, but each season feels special.

3. The Food Scene

California’s food culture is amazing: fresh produce, authentic Mexican food on every corner, endless brunch spots.

But dining out was expensive. A casual taco night for the family could easily hit $60 to $70.

Here in Tennessee, I have discovered new favorites like hot chicken, barbecue, and small-town diners where the owner knows your name. And eating out does not feel like draining your savings.

4. Family & Friends

This is the hardest one. Leaving meant putting miles between us and people we love.

But distance has made our relationships more intentional. When we see each other, it is quality time, not just quick catch-ups. And in Tennessee, we have made amazing new friendships with neighbors who truly look out for each other.

5. Endless Things to Do

California is packed with entertainment: concerts, sports, theme parks.

What I do not miss is the cost and the planning. Even a “fun day” could cost hundreds of dollars and require booking weeks ahead.

Here, fun is simpler with local festivals, live music, and events that are often free. And spontaneous plans are actually possible.

6. Mountains & Hiking

California’s mountains are stunning. I will always love Big Bear and Yosemite.

But Tennessee’s outdoor beauty is just different with rolling hills, waterfalls, and peaceful state parks. And I can hike without feeling like I am part of a parade.

7. That “California Vibe”

There is a certain energy in California with ambition, style, and sunshine.

But it comes with constant busyness and high pressure. In Tennessee, I have found peace and space to breathe. Slowing down does not mean giving up, it means actually enjoying the life you have built.

Final Thoughts

If you have been wondering why people are leaving California, it is often for the same reasons I am glad I did. Lower costs, more space, a slower pace of life, and the chance to actually enjoy each day without the constant grind.

Yes, I miss parts of California. But the life we have built here in Tennessee is worth every trade-off.
